Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Has your group ever discussed ways to create space that is welcoming and inclusive for folks who identify as non-binary*? If so, what ideas did you discuss? If not, why do you think that is the case?

  2. The article calls out a number of ways that workplaces can support non-binary employees, like avoiding gendered language and providing gender-neutral bathrooms on every floor. In your experience, what structural challenges still exist for companies and organizations that are dedicated to supporting non-binary people?

  3. Max Masure, who was interviewed for this article, differentiates calling out and calling in. Do you find this to be a useful distinction? If you saw or heard someone being misgendered, are you more likely to call out or call in?
