Something to Talk About Live: February 18, 2021

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality  program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, February 18. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: What the Golden Globe and SAG Awards Nominations Say About the Need for Further Discussions About Diversity

Source: Variety

Author: Angelique Jackson, Natalie Oganesyan, Danielle Turchiano

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article reports some good news -- significant increases in the number of BIPOC nominees, both individual and for casts and creators. Given the visibility that issues of racial justice received in the past year, does this really mark progress? Or should people be concerned about sustaining this momentum?
  2. The topic of the systemic issues that often hamper content made by marginalized creators from getting visibility and recognition are discussed. What are some of these barriers? Are there more that aren't mentioned here? And are there parallels to the experiences of creators in the LGBTQ+ space?
  3. No one is just one identity (e.g., only a person who is BIPOC, only a person who is LGBTQ+, only a person with a disability). Is the content we're seeing in the media becoming more intersectional in addressing the complexity of identity? And what are some great examples that are out there -- especially those that people might be missing?
