Talking Inclusively: May 2018

Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ+ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Did you know about the economic disparities faced by many people who are LGBTQ+ or the increased likelihood that an LGBTQ+ person of color will experience food insecurity, housing instability, and unemployment in their lifetime?

  2. The author directly quotes the report, Intersecting Injustice, regarding the intentional cultivation of “an image of our community that is wealthy, white, male, and monogamously partnered” by LGBTQ+ advocates. Based on your experience, what impact has that perception of the LGBTQ+ community had on your personal and professional life?

  3. Are there anti-poverty projects or campaigns in your community that your group can work with to support individuals and families in need? What can you do to encourage these projects or campaigns to develop the cultural competence necessary to support people who are LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+ people of color?
