This month's article:

Wave of Vandalism, Violence Hits LGBTQ Centers Across Nation

Source: NBC News

Author: Mary Emily O’Hara

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What factors do you think have led to the increase in vandalism and violence at LGBTQ+ affirming spaces (like community centers) in recent months?

  2.  According to the article, a coalition has launched a project called Communities Against Hate to document incidents of vandalism, harassment, and violence across the country that may not be captured by the FBI Hate Crimes Annual Report. Do you think this will be effective? Why or why not?

  3. Up until this point, there has been a significant amount written about the loss of LGBTQ+ focused places like neighborhoods, bars, and community centers because of the increase in acceptance of people who are LGBTQ+ identified. Do you think incidents like those highlighted in this article will create a resurgence of LGBTQ+ exclusive spaces? Why or why not?
