Talking Inclusively: February 2017

Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National's Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ+ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming for everyone.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Run across an article you’d like us to consider? Let us know by e-mailing [email protected].

This month’s article:

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Out, deaf, multiracial writer Dickie Hearts asserts that “The more you see yourself onscreen, the better you feel and realize that you’re not alone.” Do you agree or disagree?

  2. One of the significant points in the article is the importance of seeing actors who are, in reality, deaf, playing roles in films. Do you think it’s important to have actors who are from groups their characters represent in film and TV? Why? Can you give any other examples?

  3. How could you adapt your current materials, meetings, events, programs, etc. to create space for people who are deaf and LGBTQ+ and their allies? What resources do you know of that can help you learn more?
