Something to Talk About: February 2017

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Let us know by e-mailing [email protected].

This month's article:

Sex doesn’t sell any more, activism does. And don’t the big brands know it

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Have you ever made purchasing decisions based on an organization’s policies for LGBTQ+ employees, public statements on an issue like marriage equality or facilities access, or positive LGBTQ+ marketing campaigns? Why or why not? Do you know anyone else who has?

  2. Author Alex Holder claims that “…allocating their marketing budget to good causes has a better reach than spending that money elsewhere right now.” Do you agree or disagree? Do you think this tactic will continue to be effective, or does it require certain social/cultural conditions to work?

  3. Given this shift towards socially-conscious advertising, what could be next for organizations that want to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility? What could that look like for employees? For customers and stakeholders?
