Talking Inclusively: October 2019

Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ+ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.

Note: If you have not seen the video of these protests, we suggest that you watch them via the links in the article prior to discussion.

Questions for Discussion:

1. What was your immediate reaction when you saw/heard the protesters? Did you agree with them? Did it make you uncomfortable? Why or why not?

2. Host Anderson Cooper notes that there is a long and rich tradition of protest in the LGBTQ+ community, and these protests are building on that legacy. Do you feel that protesting issues at LGBTQ+ events is a good strategy to motivate action? Why or why not?

3. Did any of your LGBTQ+ friends or colleagues talk about these incidents? Did you note any commonalities in their backgrounds that correlated to their responses (e.g., "People I spoke to of younger generations like Y and Z seemed ok with it, but I found that some of my more seasoned friends resisted the protest."). Did any of these connections -- or lack of connections -- surprise you?
