Talking Inclusively: April 2019

Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Run across an article you’d like us to consider? Let us know by e-mailing info@straightforequality.org.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article mentions the growth of HIV infections in several specific communities. Did this surprise you? Did it challenge any assumptions you might have held? Why or why not?

  2. There's a significant discussion of the financial and cultural challenges in both preventing and treating HIV. Of these two categories, which seems, to you, to be the most challenging to solve? Why?

  3. One of the key themes in the article is a mistrust of the medical industry among many populations (e.g., African American mistrust in light of injustices like the Tuskegee Airmen Experiments). Can you name other examples of different communities or populations who have similar reservations? Based on personal experience, do you feel like you understand their concerns?
